A Fresh Approach, Grounded in Tradition

The Journal of the Royal Australian Historical Society (JRAHS) is changing in 2027. From September 2027, every member will receive a printed copy, in a new full-colour design with a wider range of article types. For the past five years, JRAHS has had a limited print run, and most members have read it online. Next year it goes back to print for everyone.

Four printed publications a year

Every member will receive three editions of History magazine (March, June and December) and one expanded edition of JRAHS (September).

Why we’re changing

Our 2025 members’ survey showed that 91% of respondents regularly read History, but only 45% regularly read JRAHS. We want more members to read the journal without losing its scholarly role.

Opportunities for sharing your research

Much important historical research is happening outside universities, in historical societies and among professional historians, archivists, librarians, curators and researchers. In 2027, JRAHS will have room for more of it.

Peer-reviewed, fully referenced research articles will remain at the centre of the journal. But you don’t need a full 8,000-word research article to have your work considered. Alongside them, we are welcoming shorter scholarly pieces of around 3,000 words, and research notes of perhaps only 500 words. We welcome local and community histories, biographies, essays, and articles on significant historical sources and collections. The focus stays on Australian history, particularly NSW history.
