Celebrate History Week with the RAHS!
Celebrate History Week with the Royal Australian Historical Society! The RAHS is hosting two special events during History Week. This year’s History Week theme is Water Stories.
RAHS Special Lecture – Dangerous Passage: A Maritime History of the Torres Strait
On Wednesday, 10 September, we’ll be joined at History House by Ian Burnett. Ian will discuss the history of the reef-strewn passage between Australia and Papua New Guinea, which remains the most hazardous of all the major Straits in the world. Ian will share stories of murder, mayhem, mutiny, disastrous shipwrecks, desperate voyages, headhunting and hurricanes.
RAHS Walking Tour – Water, Water, Everywhere!
On Friday, 12 September, Judith Dunn OAM will present a guided walking tour around Hyde Park. On this tour, you will discover water features that tend to go unnoticed as we hurry about our city business. Highlights will include a reference to the town’s water supply and a memorial to a popular Sydney actor. This tour is strictly limited to 20 people. Spaces are filling up quickly, so don’t miss out.

About the theme
Water is fundamental to life. It also underpins our histories. From floods to droughts, from oceans to creeks, rivers and wetlands, our pasts are bound up with the ebbs and flows of water. History Week 2025 will engage with stories of how water was cherished, contained, diverted, contaminated, looked after and shared, or withheld. History Week is the annual, state-wide celebration of History organised by the History Council of NSW.
