History House Update: January 2026
Members and visitors may notice public signage relating to proposed basement works outside History House. These notices have been placed by the City of Sydney as part of the Development Application process. The application is now on public exhibition, with further details available online via the City of Sydney ePlanning website.
Roof works
The roof works are now almost complete, with a small amount of additional work scheduled to commence next week on the eastern parapet. Recent Sydney downpours provided an important real-world test of the new waterproofing. Following the heavy rain, RAHS Librarian and Building Manager Donna Newton carefully checked the building, and we are pleased to report that there were no leaks. Regular Library visitors will know that the area where the 1870s section of the building meets the 1970s addition has often leaked during heavy rain. This time, no buckets were needed.
The roof works have been supported by our donors and a Heritage NSW Caring for State Heritage Grant. Once the remaining roof works are complete, the Society will arrange archival photography and drone footage so supporters and members can see the repairs and the new copper roof.
Basement works and access
With the roof nearing completion, the project is moving into its next phase, focusing on the basement and drainage works. The RAHS has lodged an Integrated Development Application with the City of Sydney, which is now on public exhibition until 11 February 2026. The proposal covers internal changes to non-significant areas, such as updated amenities and an accessible bathroom, along with external changes to basement access and rear doors. The application is supported by detailed drawings and a Heritage Impact Statement.
The RAHS is also continuing to explore options to improve access, including lift solutions. Australian lift manufacturers have recently visited the site and are working with the project architects and access consultants to assess possible approaches. Further updates will be shared in the coming weeks.
We thank our donors, Heritage NSW, members and friends for their continued support as we care for History House, an important place for NSW history and a shared resource for members, researchers and the wider history community.
