The Stranger’s Guide: Sydney in 1861

The Stranger’s Guide is a new walk by the City of Sydney’s history and curatorial team which recreates a tour from the mid-19th century.

Discerning descriptions by James Waugh, who wrote the travel guide more than 150 years ago, provide a glimpse of Sydney life in 1861.

A website with a selection of detailed, and animated, watercolours of must see places from the city’s past can be viewed here: https://news.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/photos/what-a-strangers-guide-to-sydney-looked-like-158-years-ago
