Josephine Ethel Foster (1870-1955) joined the Royal Australian Historical Society in 1901. Mrs Foster and her husband Arthur George (1861-1924) were inaugural members of the Society and were awarded Fellowships in 1924 and 1921 respectively. They combined their historical research and photography skills by delivering lectures accompanied by glass lantern slide images. The Fosters were also regular contributors to the Journal of the Royal Australian Historical Society.
Josephine and Arthur bequeathed their collections to the RAHS, which included over 250 books, 381 glass slides as well as their collection of 35 scrapbooks. The glass slides contain rare photographs of Devonshire Street Cemetery, taken as it was being demolished to make way for Central Station. The Foster Press Clippings (Scrapbook) Collection demonstrates the creative activities and interests of an important contributor to the historical record. They were both active members in forwarding the Society’s goal of recording and promoting Australian history.
