Click here to read ‘Convict Women in the Female Factories of New South Wales’ written by RAHS President, Associate Professor Carol Liston.
Common to most of the female convicts transported to New South Wales was time spent at the Female Factory, Parramatta. Originally above a gaol, then in a purpose built complex, its purpose was to provide a refuge and a workplace for unassigned convict women. Through the Female Factory we gain an insight into the lives of female convicts – work, motherhood, rebellion and punishment.
