The Allan Martin Award is a research fellowship intended to assist early-career historians further their research in Australian history. The Award commemorates the contribution to Australian History of A. W. Martin (1926-2002), in particular his interest in and encouragement of students and younger colleagues over a lifetime of teaching and research.

Peter won the award for his project, An Intimate Pandemic: Fostering community histories of the 1918–19 influenza pandemic centenary. Peter will work closely with local historical societies to chart how the devastating pandemic affected their communities. The University of Sydney, Macquarie University and the RAHS have already offered their support to the project. The judges noted that the ‘program of study proposed is impressive, both for its academic rigour and its spirit of community engagement.’

Peter will be delivering a talk on the subject at our 2018 Conference in Port Macquarie, entitled, Pursuing a Pandemic: Local history in medical records. Correspondingly, we will be holding a one-day seminar at History House later this year where you can learn more about the impact of the flu pandemic and how to trace its impact in your local community. We will be sharing updates via our eNewsletter so make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss out.
